We submitted our human rights complaint at the end of grade 5, after 3 months of school refusal that was met with shock from school and division admin because they didn’t understand why she didn’t want to be at school. We had over 300 pages of emails (and that doesn’t include phone calls and meetings) from issues going back to grade 1, detailing incidents and asking for planning. If they’d put in even a minimal plan for her, then we wouldn’t be here. The division even sent a social worker to our house, who spent 3 hours trying to determine what other things she was avoiding because she was too afraid. They did not believe it was only school. In the end, the social worker was finally convinced that the only place my daughter was truly afraid to go was school. Not that it helped much. Things are getting better. Her new school had a phenomenal counsellor who basically held everything together for the second half of last year. The day before school finished, we found out she’d been transferred. Hopefully, at least the plan will continue to be followed.
