My daughter’s story is really long. I will try to shorten it up. Her struggle with anxiety has been since birth but really came out during sophomore year in high school. When we first approached the school, they immediately looked at her grades and said she’d be fine. She didn’t need a 504 for her GAD [Generalized Anxiety Disorder] or major depressive disorder. Her school refusal grew. IOP and PHP programs took her away from school, and her mental health issues grew. After the first day of senior year, she was hospitalized for suicidal ideation. When asked if my daughter could get a home health care aid waiting for another IOP/PHP, I heard crickets. A couple of weeks later, the person in charge was confronted again, and his response was, “I just didn’t do it.” My daughter ended up going to a therapeutic high school and actually graduated (we didn’t think it would happen). She is now faced with going on to a technical college, and some of the same fears are coming back. She has gone from having 5 classes, down to only starting with 2. I hope that, this time around, she will be okay.
